Basketball The Curtis Wooten-coached Hastings Boys' High School side were unbeaten after yesterday's first day of play at the national secondary schoolboys basketball tournament in Christchurch.
Wooten's troops beat Hamilton BHS 75-64 and Rotorua BHS 74-53. Napier Boys lost 107-48 to defending champions Westlake BHS and 102-76 to Kelston Boys.
Hockey
Former New Zealand representative Caryn Paewai was among the goalscorers when Hawke's Bay opened the senior women's hockey tournament in Hamilton yesterday with a convincing 5-0 win against Counties-Manukau. The other goalscorers were Merania Hibbard, Alyse Weber, Holly May Taylor and Mitch O'Hara. Counties-Manukau were mostly on defence as the Hawke's Bay strikers combined well.
* Captain and right half Claire Reynolds scored two goals as Hawke's Bay opened the Central Region under-11 girls hockey tournament at Napier's Kelt Capital Hockey Stadium yesterday with a 4-0 win against Wairarapa.
Reynolds, the daughter of former Hawke's Bay tennis rep Louise Reynolds, joined defender Annabelle Waerea and gutsy winger Molly Wright were the pick of the Bay players. Wright and Mary Kirkpatrick scored the other goals.
In other games, Horowhenua beat Manawatu 1-0, Taranaki beat Wellington Development 3-0 and Wellington Small Sticks beat Wanganui Stormers 4-0.
Hawke's Bay play Taranaki and Wellington Development today.
* Left inner Liam Sykes claimed player-of-the-day honours as Hawke's Bay opened the Central Region under-11 boys tournament in New Plymouth with a 4-1 win against Wairarapa yesterday.
Sykes, Seth Corbett-Davies, Dylan Thomas and Zane Tomalin scored.
Netball A late coaching change didn't stop Eastern from producing some competitive patches on Day 1 of the national netball championships in Auckland yesterday.
Former coach Eliza Falcon answered an SOS call on Friday after Jeanette Oliver was forced to withdraw through illness. Eastern lost 65-37 to Otago.
"I was only able to have one training session with the team before we travelled away but I'm fortunate that I've worked with most of the players previously and Jeanette had done a good job in the buildup," said Falcon.
Goal attack Louise Thompson suffered a knee injury yesterday. Falcon said young Central shooter Shivonne Kutia and Kiley Hikawai, who had stints at goal attack and goal defence, performed well yesterday.
Rugby Centre Evan Te Hiko scored two tries as defending champions Napier opened the Ross Shield rugby tournament in Dannevirke yesterday with a 32-0 win against Wairoa. Te Hiko is one of three children in his family, all of whom have played for Napier in the Ross Shield. Sister Marise played in the 2001 and 2002 tournaments and brother Aayden in 2004.
Hastings East loose forward Thomas Alison scored the first try of the tournament in the 24-7 win against Dannevirke. International sprinter Cameron Laken scored two tries for Hastings West as they beat Central 20-6.
Scorers:
Hastings East 24 (Thomas Alison, Joshua Burdon, Art Volau, penalty try; Oliver Morrison 2 cons), Dannevirke 7 (Andrew Williams try; Gillis Te Ture con).
Hastings West 20 (Cameron Laken 2, Kayne Kingi, Te Rira Rowlands tries), Central 6 (Toby Richardson 2 pens). Napier 32 (Evan Te Hiko 2, Darren Nevison, Jesse Hamlin, Thomas Katene-Taingahue, Matthew Murtha tries; Manihera Eden con).
* Hawke's Bay opened the Hurricanes under-16 rugby tournament in Levin yesterday with a 43-0 loss to Manawatu.
