A Napier Girls' High School senior girls trifecta was a feature of Thursday's East Coast North Island Secondary Schools' road championships in Hastings. Hannah Drury won the 4km race on Copeland Road near the Hastings Christian School in 15m28s. Her schoolmates Anna Paget and Anieke Engels were second and third respectively. AnotherNGHS runner, Lydia Diver, finished second to her training partner Laura Nagel of Taradale High School in the junior girls' 4km race. Nagel, with her time of 15m02s, broke the course record by 44 seconds. Hastings Girls' High School's Greta Porter was third. Eric Speakman was the other Taradale High School runner to win a title. Fresh from a second placing in the national under-20 road race in Auckland, Speakman won the senior boys' 6km race in 20m36s. Hastings Boys' High School's Brett Pulford was second and Napier Boys' High School's Marno Wynsma third. Napier Boys' High School's Duncan Morrison won the junior boys' 4km race in 13m54s. Havelock North High School's William Hocquard was second and Morrison's teammate Ben Gillies third. Another Napier Boys' High School runner, Michael Murray, won the year nine 3km race in 10m40s. A Taradale High School pair of Callum MacDonald and Danyon Drake were second and third respectively. MacDonald is one of Taradale High School's top swimmers and his only training for the champs was his swimming training. Both MacDonald and Drake were members of their school's junior A soccer team which won their grade and Knockout Cup competition. Napier Girls' High School's Jess Middleton won the year nine girls' 3km race in 11m42s. Havelock North High School's Kate Mackintosh was second and Middleton's teammate Laura Smith third.
