There's no limit to the fascination for the opinions of others. The daily "vox pop" on this page has been a popular feature since we redesigned Hawke's Bay Today more than six months ago to put more emphasis on local news and on what our readers are thinking.
With that in
mind, we want to make the most of the speed and ease of using the internet to increase our contact with readers. Emails are an increasingly accessible way of canvassing readers' opinion.
We are aiming to gather an emailing community of readers so we can send each of them regular questions about current issues to which they can respond directly. We will also be asking questions about Hawke's Bay Today, what readers like (or dislike) about us, the effect of changes we make to our news coverage, the treatment of stories and what additional features readers want, and so on.
If you would like to join Hawke's Bay Today's readers team, send an email to editor@hbtoday.co.nz together with full contact details. A digital picture of yourself would be welcome. Type "Readers team" in the subject line.
Meanwhile, we're on a mission to discover what our readers think makes the region great.
So often we hear how much folk enjoy living in the Bay. Indeed, why would we want to live anywhere else? There is plenty that appeals. Is it the climate, the wine, the rivers, the people ... ? Let's gather them up and list them in their order of importance, according to popular appeal.
Tell us what you believe is Hawke's Bay's greatest asset - what makes us unique, and why ... and we will publish the results. You could win a dinner for two at a top Hawke's Bay restaurant.
Send submissions, in less than 200 words, to "Great to be in the Bay", PO Box 180, Hastings, fax to (06) 873 0811 or email to editor@hbtoday.co.nz
Among the new features we're planning is the highly addictive Japanese brainteaser Sudoku, a numbers puzzle that seems to have captured the hearts and minds of newspaper readers in the UK and more recently in Australia. We received requests for Sudoku after an article last month in 48 Hours featuring its designer New Zealander Wayne Gould, who discovered the game during a visit to Tokyo in 1997 and created a computer program that generates the puzzles.
Our first daily Sudoku will appear on Monday. It gets progressively more difficult through the week. Happy puzzling.
