In a ceremony last week Totara College dedicated its World War I memorial garden. The dedication took place at 10.20am during the school's annual Garden Expo, when the Dannevirke Highland Pipe Band led the visitors to the garden following a line of crosses remembering the fallen.
After a welcome byprincipal Debbie Max, the Reverend Ron Ashford conducted the blessing recalling the events of Passchendaele in particular and promising "we will remember them".
Head students Kimberley Fraser and Joel Dean presented readings before ex-pupil Pirran Kendall played The Last Post and Reveille.
Totara College secretary Cath Cameron spoke about the origins of the garden, initiated by her son Malcolm who drowned in 2016. The garden is decorated by red car hub caps reflecting the poppies of Flanders Fields.
Head students Kimberley and Joel then cut the ribbon to declare the garden open followed by a final prayer and blessing.
