A young man naked from the waist down gave spectators something to remember when he tried to join the field of the final race at Saturday's Spring Racing Carnival in Hastings.

The streaker jumped the rails down the home straight after the horses passed him by, about 75m from the finish line.

He showed a fair bit of pace and some fine form, in full stride displaying all his bells and whistles while still managing to hold on to his can of beer. Trailing the bunch, he was forced to make a U-turn as security staff appeared.

In a moment which resembled a scene from the Benny Hill Show, the young man turned back to run towards where he had discarded his pants, zigzagging for a while in an attempt to shake off his pursuers.

The game was up, however, as security staff tackled him to the ground, giving him time to calm down before being escorted to the main gate. Some spectators were disappointed he didn't get to finish the race, while friends who were cheering him on, calling him "Yohan", told Hawke's Bay Today he had been dared to join the race.

Police said the man was "a bit intoxicated" and was likely to have a trespass notice issued, preventing him from entering the Hawke's Bay Racing Centre for two years.
