A poster by Dannevirke High School pupil Sarah Gemmell, has been selected as the winning entry for the zone in the Lions Club International Peace Poster competition.
The theme for the 2011-2012 contest is Children Know Peace and Sarah's poster is currently being held at the District Head Office untilit goes on display at the district convention in the coming weeks.
Sarah became involved in the competition after hearing about it from her father Vance, a member of the Lions Club.
"I decided to enter because I really enjoy doing art and once I got the ideas for the poster, it just flowed from there," she said.
Her painted poster depicted a rainbow coloured peace sign in the centre with a small globe. Small peace signs were on either side and the entire poster was bordered with pictures of people holding hands.
"I thought it fitted in well with the theme," Sarah said.
"I spent a lot of time designing and painting and it was a lot of fun to do. I was delighted to be picked as the zone winner."
She was recently recognised for her efforts and presented with an achievement award. Her entry will now be judged at the next level. If it advances through the multiple district judging, Sarah could well be winging her way to an award ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations in New York in March.
Entries are judged on three criteria: originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. The aim of the competition is to allow children aged 11 to 13, to creatively express what peace means to them and share their unique image of peace with others so everyone may have greater tolerance and international understanding.
