About 1000 people gathered to farewell 17-year-old Robert Waikari at a funeral service in Hastings yesterday.
Robert was one of two teenagers who died in a collision between a van and a car on a bridge near Taradale at the weekend.
His funeral was held at Hawke's Bay Racing Centre in Hastings and, as his coffin was taken to the hearse, a large group of those who attended performed a powerful haka.
A student who was injured in the collision, whose name has not been released, attended the funeral in an ambulance and was taken inside on a stretcher.
Many of those attending were Robert's school friends from Havelock North High School.
The other teen who died, Max Harman, also 17, was farewelled at the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter Service Hangar today.
Another teen involved in the crash, Ben Morrison, 18, is critically ill in Wellington Hospital.
