Paraglider seriously injured after fall onto track on Te Mata Peak

A paraglider is in hospital with serious injuries after falling on to a track on Te Mata Peak on Tuesday night.

The man, in his 50s, was on Wednesday morning in a stable condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital, a district health board spokeswoman said.

St John's Ambulance were called to the scene at 6.18pm, followed by fire and police shortly after.

They were given assistance from firefighters shortly after to "extricate a patient off the track and into the ambulance".

A St John spokeswoman said an ambulance transported the patient to hospital in a serious condition.

Hawkes Bay Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club president Rebecca Rae said she was unable to comment, given the incident is now under an investigation.

"Our thoughts go out the pilot and his family."

Rae said the all their pilots are trained and are licensed under the NZ Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association.

An experienced paraglider who did not wish to be named said it was "very unusual" to have an accident, particularly given Tuesday night's "really good" weather conditions.

He said it was a safe sport if individual paragliders took steps to safeguard themselves from the elements.

"Te Mata Peak is a risky launch as it is very steep."
