Norsewood goes off for Guy Fawkes thanks to community groups' efforts

Sack races and other traditional games run by Norsewood Lions were popular before darkness fell.

Three local community groups - Norsewood Promotions, Norsewood Fire Brigade and the Norsewood Lions Club - say they are pleased with the support and success of a Guy Fawkes event held at Mathew Park in Norsewood on Saturday.

The community groups were rewarded for their efforts by the event's best crowd ever, in excess of 250.

Locals took along the fireworks which lit the sky

Families who took part enjoyed near perfect weather conditions.

The crowd of Norsewood families was swelled by support from Dannevirke and Takapau, attracted by a picnic, and traditional games beforehand, a big bonfire and a fireworks display that kicked off just on dark.

The event was organised by Norsewood Promotions which also ran a barbecue.

The bonfire was set alight and roared into the darkness.

The Norsewood Volunteer Fire Brigade dealt to the bonfire and crackers while Lions occupied the children with games and races including three-legged, sack and egg and spoon - all the old favourites, finished off by the Pied Piper being mobbed in the lolly scramble.

The Hovding Hall benefited from the gold-coin entry donation.
