The plan for a new $60 million bridge at Waiohiki on the outskirts of Napier has been confirmed, including the bridge’s alignment over the Tūtaekurī River.

Construction is expected to start in late 2026.

The original Redclyffe Bridge, built in 1933 over the Tūtaekurī River, was destroyed during Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023.

A temporary bridge was opened in August 2023, and remains in use.

Hastings District Council (HDC) and Napier City Council (NCC) have been weighing up different options for a new permanent bridge.

It was announced on Monday that “option 2C” had been selected as the preferred option.

“This option proposes a new bridge immediately upstream of the existing crossing, skewed slightly from the current alignment,” a council statement said.

“It offers the strongest overall benefits among six options considered.”

The concept design also features a new roundabout on the Taradale end of the new bridge.

The estimated construction cost for the new bridge is $60 million.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with completion around late 2028.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi will fund the bulk of the project cost, with HDC and NCC sharing the remainder of the cost.

“If construction is completed by June 30, 2029, the project is eligible for an 83% funding assistance rate from NZTA, significantly reducing the cost to local ratepayers,” the council statement read.

Hastings Mayor Wendy Schollum said the chosen option “delivers a modern, resilient and cost-effective solution that strengthens the connection between Waiohiki and Taradale”.

Napier Mayor Richard McGrath said it was a vital bridge.

“Getting this bridge in place efficiently and in a way that meets both communities’ needs and expectations is a priority.”
