It's not often that you make money by spending it, but that was the case for Havelock North mother Karen Speers who was named the second winner of Hastings' Big Spender competition yesterday.
Mrs Speers entered the competition only once after buying a school uniform for her child at
Postie Plus. "There were a huge pile of entries, it was such a surprise that my name was drawn," she said.
This week's prize was sponsored by HBS bank and included $500 in an HBS bank account and a $500 donation to a community organisation of the winner's choice.
Ms Speers wants to gift the $500 to Te Mata Kindergarten. "That's where my 4-year-old son, Tom, goes," she said.
"I thought if I gave the money to them they would benefit from it directly, I didn't want the donation to get tied up in the red tape of a big organisation."
