Blue skies, sunny spells and warm temperatures are expected to hit the Bay this weekend as the school holidays draw to a close.

MetService meteorologist Cameron Coutts said it should be a fine day today and Saturday, with a mostly fine day on Sunday.

"There could be some brief showers on Sunday with a quick southerly change but it should fine up again on Monday."

The southerly flow, which had been lingering over Hawke's Bay this week, was expected to die out overnight and a period of settled weather was forecast to take over.

"It will be a lot better than last weekend although I guess you couldn't really get any worse than that."

This absolute drenching last weekend meant Hawke's Bay Racing's biggest race day of the year, the Livamol Classic, had to be postponed to October 22 and organisers would be hoping this fine weather continues.

Mr Coutts said temperatures would sit around the high teens to low 20s this weekend with a high of 20C forecast today, 23C tomorrow and 19C on Sunday.

The only chance of a morning frost was this morning with overnight temperatures dropping to 5C before rising back to overnight lows of 8C and 9C during the weekend.

"Overall, it will be pretty pleasant so people should try to get out and enjoy it."

This was good news for families making the most of the last weekend of the school holidays after a rainy start to their final week.

Whether people were keen to hit the Original Gypsy Fair in Havelock North tomorrow or head to White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve to participate in the "Meet a Kiwi Competition" run by the Department of Conservation and Toyota, the weather shouldn't be an issue.

This was also good news for the athletes competing in the annual Staples Rodway Challenge at Clifton tomorrow. Competitors would be treated to views far and wide, with the course going along beaches, through forests, next to waterfalls and across coastal farmland.

"On the whole it will be a good few days and a spell of some good settled weather," Mr Coutts said.
