"He is potentially going to be discharged in a week or so and moved to another hospital or rehabilitation centre somewhere close to where he lives.
"His left foot is still in plaster, and he can't bear weight on it - it could be another month before that plaster comes off."
Kent spoke to Joel on Monday this week and said his brother was still coming to terms with the extent of rehabilitation ahead.
"He's realising that it's going to take a while to be fully up and running again - the next big battle is sorting out in his mind how to deal with it, but he's making good progress."
The family was keen to bring Joel home to Dannevirke for the remainder of his recovery and started a Givealittle.co.nz page to help pay for costs not covered by ACC or British social services.
By yesterday they had raised $20,617 since the page was created on June 21.
Kent said this would be put towards Joel's rehabilitation costs as well as flights home, and further rehabilitation in New Zealand.
"It's been very helpful - the generosity of people has been quite unbelievable."
Police had CCTV footage of the offender and were still investigating the attack.
