Libraries offer newbies IT help

The libraries in Flaxmere, Hastings and Havelock North are offering a weekly information technology (IT) question-and-answer sessions, at which people can bring laptops, tablets or other new technology for one-on-one assistance.

In addition to the computer sessions, the libraries are also offering weekly classes on the use of iPads, eBooks and Skype.

District libraries manager Paula Murdoch said providing IT literacy was a growing role for libraries.

"With so much of today's information available online, IT literacy is an important skill in our everyday life.

"The new format sessions will mean people can bring their new gadgets to the library and learn the basics in a supportive environment," Ms Murdoch said.

She said the libraries had been offering free tutorials on the use of cellphones for three years and introduced basic computing classes at the beginning of 2011. "Many of those who attend our classes are adults who are having a little trouble understanding a particular piece of technology, such as an iPad.

"This has sometimes been given to them by a family member and perhaps hasn't included much in the way of instruction on how to operate it or what it is capable of. These classes are an ideal way for anyone who wants to gain greater skills in technology to learn at their own pace, in a non-threatening environment."
