A large grass fire has broken out near State Highway 50 in Onga Onga, Central Hawke's Bay.

A New Zealand Fire spokesperson said they alerted at 3.45pm and fire was about 100 metres long.

It was orginally threatening some residential properties before the wind changed direction.

"Firefighters seem to have it under control at the moment, as the wind has changed direction and it's now heading towards a creek."

The spokesperson said two water tankers, four urban fire trucks and two local fire engines were in attendance along with the police.
