Kids books spread wildlife message

A Hawke's Bay author passionate about bringing children one step closer to nature has released his fourth book.

Nicholas Rumble, 26, writes children's books which he hopes will educate young readers about the importance of looking after the environment.

His books all have a "good message, good meaning and a lesson about New Zealand wildlife," Rumble said.

The writer said he had been working hard over the past few years gathering "ingredients" for his books.

His earlier books are illustrated by photographs mostly taken by Rumble and his older brother Tim.

"When I was younger I would tag along with my brother when he went out to take photographs. I got the bug and now I'm a keen photographer and, of course, I love writing, have done since I was a kid."

He says he has had lots of great feedback about his books which are self-published.

"It's really hard to get into the book market in New Zealand.

"I wanted to make my books as affordable as possible."

He has taken his book to the people, visiting kindergartens and doing book readings.

"I really think parents should encourage their children to become more involved with conservation and less involved with computer games."

His latest book, Mr Penguin and the Rainbow Stones, is bright and bold with illustrations by local teen Mandy Hodge.
