Choristers from schools throughout Hawke's Bay put on their best singing voices yesterday as they took the stage at The Kids Sing.

The event is the junior version of The Big Sing, which was held earlier in the year. Thirteen primary and intermediate schools, with up to 500 students participated.

The Kids Sing co-ordinator Ngaire Shand said she was impressed by the standard of singing and the way the choirs presented themselves.

"We had seven-year-olds right up to 13-year-olds, so there was a range of ages and everyone sang really well," she said.

Each choir performed three items during the day before performing one song in the evening at the gala concert.

There was one set piece, either In my Dream or Sisi sote, both by Andy Beck, and then two songs of their own choice.

Peak Vision Church in Havelock North was packed with supporters cheering on their children on stage.

"We didn't have enough chairs, there were so many people - it was a great day for the kids and they were all very excited."

The adjudicator was Katie MacFarlane, a recognised director of choirs in Wellington, and she was also impressed by the standard on display.

Ms MacFarlane said there was an exciting range of music and some great student leadership shown in some choirs.

"I really enjoyed myself and was pleased by what I saw throughout the day."

The Kids Sing comes under the umbrella of the New Zealand Choral Federation and is held throughout the North Island.
