A Samoan national accused of raping a 16-year-old girl in a Flaxmere park has been banned from returning to Hawke's Bay unless he is due to appear in court.

Tofa Fuaivaa, 30, appeared at Hastings District Court yesterday before Judge Richard Watson and was granted bail to an address in Blenheim.

He was instructed by Judge Watson to go directly to the address and not to return to Hawke's Bay for any reason other than court or a meeting with his lawyers.

Fuaivaa has been charged with rape in relation to an incident on April 6.

The alleged rape occurred in the vicinity of Ron Giorgi Park in Flaxmere. The offender was not known to the victim.

Detective Sergeant Craig Vining issued a statement at the time of the incident calling for young people to look after themselves and their friends.

"Safety in numbers is still a good deterrent from would-be offenders.

"We want to prevent victims having to go through these harrowing and often life-changing situations."
