In the middle of National Volunteer Week the region's finest volunteers have been honoured at the 2017 Hawke's Bay Volunteer Excellence Awards held last night.
The awards recognised the volunteering efforts of 28 nominated individuals and organisations who have contributed to the community.
Hawke's Bay Seafarers Welfare Society president IanHopson won the individual award after volunteering at the Seafarer's Centre since it opened in 1983, as well as giving back to Meals on Wheels, Te Whare Mahana Trust, NZ National Singing School, Hawke's Bay Opera Trust and Ahuriri Rotary.
Runner-up for the individual award was Carol Olsen for her work at People's Advocacy Society to help locals get entitlements from government agencies.
Cranford Hospice Life Story Biographers and Publishers won the team award for the work they do to put together published books, A Life Story, for patients facing the end stages of life; gathering photographs, events, and anecdotes to share with family members.
Runner-up for the team award was the Environment, Conservation and Outdoor Education Trust for its conservation work with kiwi.
The youth award winner was Peyton Pyke Duffy, a keen conservationist who had volunteered at the National Aquarium since 2014, and runner-up was Rebekah Raihania for her volunteering efforts as a Hawke's Bay netball umpire.
This year's governance award-winner was the Hawke's Bay Area Plunket Board which was recognised for its efforts as an advocate for families in the community.
