Hastings District Council want to avoid scenes like this.

Hastings District Council want to avoid scenes like this.

As the summer crowds flood into Hastings, the council is asking people to flatten their cardboard and squash their plastic bottles and tin cans before putting them into recycling facilities. More visitors in town put extra pressure on the recycling depots, council's waste minimisation officer Dominic Salmon said.

There are no changes to rubbish and recycling pickups in Hastings - "so if your regular pickup day falls on Christmas Day or New Year's Day it will still be collected on that day".

-The Henderson Road Transfer Station will only be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day - the rest of the time it will be almost business as usual but with a slightly later opening time of 9.45am on the public holidays.

-The Blackbridge Transfer Station, normally open on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. On December 26 (Boxing Day), December 27, and January 2 and 3, it will be open from 9am to 5pm.

-In Waimarama, the recycling depot in the Waimarama Domain car park has been revamped and has a lot more room for glass, plastic, tins, paper and cardboard. The improvements to the recycling facility mean there will be no kerbside recycling in Waimarama, however there are extra pickups of the official orange council rubbish bags. As well as the regular Monday collection, there will be collections every Thursday - from December 24 to January 28, orange bags need to be kerbside by 7.30am.
