MetService Afternoon Weather Update: January 29 2026. Video / MetService

After the recent wet weather, it would be easy to assume that summer is over.

But like a villain from a 1980s action movie sequel – it’s back with a vengeance this weekend in Hawke’s Bay with the sun set to shine and temperatures tickling the 30s.

MetService meteorologist Samkelo Magwala said the region can expect settled weather, clear sky conditions with warm temperatures from Wairoa to Waipukurau this weekend.

On Friday, a high of 22C and a low of 13C is expected in Wairoa, a high of 23C and a low of 16C in Napier, a high of 23C and a low of 14C in Hastings, and a high of 21C and a low of 13C in Waipukurau.

Southwesterly and westerly winds will turn easterly throughout Friday afternoon.

The heat will turn up another notch on Saturday with a high of 29C and a low of 14C predicted for Wairoa, 27C with a low of 14C in Napier, 29C and a low of 12C in Hastings, and 28C with a low of 11C in Waipukurau.

Light winds will turn into northwesters in the evening.

Sunday is forecast to see 25C with a low of 15C in Wairoa and Napier, 26C with a low of 14C in Hastings, and 27C with a low of 13C in Waipukurau, with light winds expected across the region.

With some schools reopening on Monday, Magwala said there was still lots of sunshine to be enjoyed before the school year kicks off.

However, he said showers are forecast to develop on Monday, but that wouldn’t stop the high temperatures with Wairoa predicted to reach 30C, 31C in Napier, 32C in Hastings, with Waipukurau expecting to hit 28C.
