A huge turn-out by Hawke's Bay residents at this year's Hohepa Country Fair has made the annual event a resounding success, says Hohepa general manager Andy White.
The fair, held at the Hohepa residential community in Clive on Saturday, was "packed" with people from the local community and further afield,Mr White said. "There were a lot of people coming and going, probably the highest number in recent years."
The fair featured an archery range, live music, craft stalls and a taekwondo display. "It's a pleasurable day for the family," he said. "And the food is always great."
Hohepa Hawke's Bay is a residential community and school for people with intellectual disabilities. The 130 children or adults at Hohepa were all involved in the country fair.
"Whether they were selling their artwork or crafts or helping behind the scenes," Mr White said, "it was a social day; a day of interaction. Ultimately, it shows our appreciation of public support and makes us a part of the community."
Hohepa residents are involved in daily vocational programmes, ranging from craft skills for weaving, feltmaking, woodwork, candlemaking, farming and gardening.
