The rescue service helicopter crew complete more than 300 lifesaving missions a year, helping those who need urgent medical care and transportation. Although the service is free of charge, it costs $2.3 million each year to operate the service.

O'Reilly said they were happy with the funds raised from the marathon.

"$3000 dollars is an incredible amount to have raised and it is fantastic to see the support from the community with this," she said.

Funds from the event will go directly to keeping the rescue service available 24/7, 365 days a year, free of charge to the community.

Race director for Ironman Oceania Adam McDonald is delighted participants made a contribution to such a worthy local charity.

Competitors had the option of full or half-marathon, a 10km run or kid's run.

"By having the helicopter at our finish line wine and food festival, we are also able to help with an awareness of the service and lift the profile of the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter and remind people of the incredible work they do."
