Hawke's Bay fencers made a clean sweep at the Taumarunui Show on Saturday.

In the doubles power fencing competition Hawke's Bay contractors took the top three places.

Gordon Hansen and Shane Bouskill won first place while Jared Nicholson and Tony Bouskill took second and Paul and Jason Van Beers finished third. Competitors had to erect 40m of five-wire electric fencing and a gate.

Mr Bouskill said each year the competition gets tougher.

"It's not just about speed, it's also quality and consistency - getting everything right," he said.

"I guess experience helps too - I've done a few of them now."

Mr Nicholson said his team only missed out on winning by five points, but it was all good training.

"We treat these regionals as a build-up to our big event - the Mystery Creek Fieldays."

The Waikato competition is the only one with the resources to hold a competition for traditional traditional post and batten fences.

Mr Nicholson said the Hawke's Bay fencers knew each other well.

"We yarn to each other and tell each other tricks and stories of what we have learned along the way and put it into practice at the regionals. So come June we are all finely tuned machines."
