Fallen soldiers identified

Details of two fallen servicemen memorialised by a stand of oak trees in Hastings have been found.
The trees, outside the former Tomoana freezing works, were planted in 1944 to commemorate works' employees lost in World War II.
Elizabeth Gunn, Marcia Murtagh and Calvin Appleby have been searching for details of the employees and have identified two servicemen: Walter Archibald O'Malley, RNZAF sergeant, and Phillip Henry Tritt, lance sergeant in the NZ Machine Gun Battalion.
Hastings RSA manager Neil Murphy was supporting the work but said some names may not be found. He'd like to see a small plaque installed on site commemorating all those who were lost. The trees are now on Heinz Wattie's and Lowe Corporation property.
