One of New Zealand's top economists will be addressing Hawke's Bay's inequality and affordable housing issues next month, with the return of an annual speaker series.
Author, economist and commentator Shamubeel Eaqub will be in Hastings district to talk about Housing and Inequality at noon on Tuesday. March 6,at the Havelock North Function Centre.
Mr Eaqub's presentation is a fundraising event for the Friends of Hastings District Libraries and group secretary Bernadette Krassoi said the event marked the returns of its popular speaker series.
"The Friends of Hastings District Libraries instituted a speaker series some years back. It's a fund-raiser for the library and it's $10 a ticket. The people who have come to speak have done it free of charge - as is Shamubeel."
Past speakers had included the likes of Sir Bob Jones, and Sir Geoffrey Palmer.
"So this year we are kicking it off with Shamubeel Eaqub. He's going to be talking about housing and inequality."
Shamubeel Eaqub is an experienced economist who makes economics understandable. In his book Generation Rent, co-authored with partner Selena, he took on the economic, political and cultural forces pushing up house prices and leaving an entire generation with no choice other than to rent for the rest of their lives. In this talk he will look at how the housing market has become even more unpalatable and unrealistic for many.
