A day in the garden at Otope was a first for Dannevirke and the organisers were expecting 200 people to turn up, but 482 made the trek into the country.

"Liz [Parkes] and I were completely overwhelmed by the support and we raised $2400 for the Dannevirke St John health shuttle, from the gate takings," a delighted Sue Buchanan said.

"All the stallholders were ecstatic, but Liz and I couldn't have organised this without the support of our friends, family and the public."

For the members of Dannevirke's EvaReady Cheery Chicz it was a day to dress up and have fun in the sun.

"It's absolutely fabulous and something we need more of," Kween Chookie, aka Kathryn Mulinder, said.

Dannevirke's Carol Paul had just one word to describe the market in Sue Buchanan's garden - "fantastic".

Stallholder Liz Gunson, of Rust Never Sleeps, said the setting was beautiful and she admired the talents of other locals who manned stalls.

Visitors queued for coffee, homemade cakes, iced drinks and a gourmet barbecue, while there was a frenzy of buying at the Otope Landscape stall with eager shoppers grabbing plants.

But it was also a day for friends to sit in the garden and catch up with friends.

"It was an amazing day and we're so pleased to be able to donate a substantial amount to the health shuttle," Sue said.

John Ross, a volunteer on the shuttle, said the organisation was very appreciative of the work Sue and Liz put into the event and the resulting donation.

"They did a great job and the public supported them too. We never envisaged a donation like this."

And to top off the day, several drivers from the Dannevirke's Wheels with Attitude event made the journey to Otope.

"Gardeners want to shop and I know many who came out here also visited Dannevirke's Just Gifts and Kildrummie Nursery," Sue said.

Sue and Liz are already planning for next year's event, keen to attract new stallholders.
