Police are still investigating the cause of a crash on the outskirts of Dannevirke early Saturday morning which has left one person in hospital with serious injuries.

A police spokesman said it appears the two vehicles crashed head-on on State Highway 2, south of Dannevirke, at Laws Rd at 8.30am.

"One person was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but they're not thought to be life threatening," the spokesman added.

Fire, police and ambulance were on the scene and Dannevirke Volunteer Fire Brigade chief, Pete Sinclair, said it appeared one car had crossed the centre line, crashing head-on into an oncoming car.

"One passenger was trapped in a vehicle and we took the side of the car off to get her into the ambulance," he said.

The brigade, with two trucks and one crew, were on the scene for approximately an hour Mr Sinclair said, with the road closed for a time while the vehicles were loaded onto a truck.
