A man was injured after crashing his quad bike in Waimarama yesterday, but Hawke's Bay has not contributed to the road toll this long weekend.

There were no major crashes in the region during the official Queen's Birthday weekend holiday period which began at 4pm on Friday and ended at 6am this morning.

Acting Senior Sergeant Nigel Hurley said Hawke's Bay police had reported there were a number of minor crashes during the long weekend.

"Traffic flow on the highway has been steady to very busy at times, the main concern on the highways was with ice on State Highway 5 [road from Napier to Taupo] on hills and bends that get little sun."

He said grit was spread to assist motorists.

"This serves as a reminder that despite the out-of-season temperatures that we are still getting during the day it is winter, and please keep a close eye out for dark patches on the road surface, they often indicate ice."

Police also urged caution be taken by motorists travelling from north of Hawke's Bay to Woodville after fog crept in causing limited visibility of 150m-200m in some areas.

The provisional long weekend road toll reached 11 when three people died in a 4WD crash with a tree in Northland. The crash happened at 6.45pm.

A motorcyclist was killed yesterday afternoon in a collision with a car in Huntly.

On Sunday afternoon one person was killed when the vehicle they were driving struck a tree near Kaingaroa Forest.

On Saturday, someone was killed in a three-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 at Greta Valley, between Christchurch and Kaikoura.

About two hours earlier a motorcyclist died after crashing into a parked vehicle in the Auckland suburb of Flat Bush.

A 64-year-old Kaikoura man, Stuart Ernest Windle, was the first road fatality this holiday weekend. He was killed in a three-car smash on Friday.

The three cars had been travelling south when the crash happened.

Emergency services at the scene said it appeared a vehicle had crossed the centre line on a corner.

The second death of the holiday weekend happened early on Saturday when two cars collided on State Highway 3 near Te Kuiti.

Official Ministry of Transport figures show last year five people died during the same holiday weekend.
