LUCY CRAYMER
It was just another bruise for Hata Mackey when he was thrown from a bull during the rodeo competition yesterday at the Hawke's Bay Show in Hastings.
But like the other riders, he'll climb back up again before long, trying to keep himself atop the writhing beast for just a few seconds longer.
It's the adrenalin, another bullrider Dean Hudson says when asked why he would take part in such a risky sport.
It was Dean's first competition, and though sore from being thrown from the bull, he was enthusiastic about the event.
The number of spectators around the arena had show organiser Michael Pyatt cheering, too. He said the rodeo and the shearing had drawn large crowds.
The rodeo was a first-time event for the show and although all talk of next year's show was relegated to after the event, Mr Pyatt said they would look at including it.
He said the show had been tremendous, with huge crowds arriving for the day.
"I've just been talking to the security guards and they said the crowds have been extremely well behaved," he said.
While not ready to stake his life on it, Mr Pyatt thought more than 30,000 people had shown up for the festivities.
