Cool change for Hawke's Bay this week thanks to southerly front

A southerly change has brought temperatures down across Hawke's Bay today, and temperatures are forecast to stay mild for much of the week.

Both Napier and Hastings reached 27 degrees today but will drop to a cool 14 degrees tonight.

MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said the southerly change that has just gone through Hawke's Bay has brought with it some rain.

"There is some rain spreading north at the moment and that's going to bring some slightly cooler temperatures, so for example tomorrow's high for Napier/Hastings is only 20 degrees," Adams said.

"The rest of the week is just sort of gradually cooling as the southerly winds die out and just looks like for tomorrow and the next day, it's just going to be cloudy with the odd shower about."

Things aren't going to be overly humid and with some pretty mild overnight temperatures it will make it a lot easier to sleep.

Things are going to gradually warm up later in the week, with Napier and Hastings forecast to be 26 degrees by Thursday and Friday.

"February 2017 was a fairly wet month. There was 149mm that fell out at Napier Airport, compared to an average February rainfall of 65mm," Adams said.

"So far this month, Napier Airport has had 71mm, with still a few days to go in the month but not expecting a lot of rain in the next few days."
