There might not be a dry eye in the house when Cactus Jacks Music Saloon in Waipawa hosts an Andrews Sisters tribute act ahead of Anzac Day.

On Sunday afternoon, April 23, entertainers Yvonne Williams, Sandy Nielson and Leana Atkenson will be performing their popular Andrews Sisters Tribute act at Cactus Jacks as part of a Hitz of the Blitz concert, which will also feature a good old-fashioned sing-a-long led by Palmerston North pianist, Robert Cleaver.

Venue owner Lee Walker said she had organised the concert as music provided a much-needed escape for people during wartime.

"It gave everybody something to feel good about. I hope people will come along and just have fun," she said.

Yvonne Williams has been the performing her Andrews Sisters tribute act for 12 years, with Sandy Neilson at her side for eight of those while newest member, Leana Atkenson, is in her third year.

The Andrews Sisters were huge in the World War II era, and Yvonne said the tribute act includes the harmony group's biggest hits including Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Bei mir Bist Du Schoen, Beer Barrel Polka and Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree.

Yvonne said the tribute act brought a "tear to the eye" of many when they performed at local RSAs on Anzac Day, and not just older generations.

"It's very touching to see the young people also getting emotional on this very special day, which is a joy to watch," she said.
