A shed fire in southern Hawke's Bay has sparked a timely warning about the "tinder dry" conditions in the region.
Hastings Fire Station officer Michael Manning said emergency services were called to a shed at the rear of a property along State Highway 2 in Te Hauke about 10.15am yesterday.
Three Hastings appliances and a water tanker from Otane attended the incident after passing motorists called the fire in.
"It was well involved when we arrived. The fire was not suspicious in nature, however we believe the cause of the fire was embers from an open fire pit," Mr Manning said.
The station officer said it was likely embers from an open fire had been picked up in the wind and set alight dry grass next to the shed, measuring around 10m by 6m, before eating into the infrastructure.
