An Australian-based Kiwi couple staying on Napier's Marine Parade recently were woken by a heavy truck passing their motel at 5.52am and were stunned that the passing parade of large vehicles accessing the port continued until 10.41pm.
Dennis and Dianne Parkin, from Coolum Beach in Queensland, noted the times as they were surprised, and slightly shocked, at the number of trucks using the stretch and asked an open question - "what on earth are the council thinking?"
It was the couple's fourth visit to Napier this year, because of a family illness, and they have been left less than impressed with the constant access heavy trucks have to the otherwise picturesque seafront.
Mr Parkin said while he and his wife had "thoroughly enjoyed staying in your beautiful city" and liked staying on the Marine Parade seafront, there was a major "but" included.
"We cannot understand why the city mayor and the powers that be allow such large trucks to use this route to get to the port, especially when there is another route designated for port access."
