Napier's National Aquarium of New Zealand has a fluffy new addition to its penguin family.
The Department of Conservation gave a five-day-old little penguin chick to the aquarium after it was rescued from a nest in Ahuriri that had been disturbed. Ten weeks later the chick, whose sex is yet to be determined, has had a hefty increase in weight from 98g to 780g, thanks to being fed a steady diet of fish up to four times a day.
Staff have dubbed the penguin "Boo" while they try to think of a permanent name.
Senior keeper Rebekah Cuthbert said the average adult little penguin weighed 1kg, and within a few weeks all the chick's adult feathers would be in place.
The chick would soon become part of the aquarium's penguin display, spending short periods in the enclosure until the keepers were certain the birds were used to each other.
