The trend for down-and-dirty roller derby is growing in Hawke's Bay.
Its popularity was clear at an inaugural Battle of the Bays bout at Pettigrew-Green Arena in Taradale on Saturday night.
About 880 people piled into the venue to check out the action and learn a little more about roller derby.
"It went really well, we had close to 900 people so we were really stoked," Bay City Rollers co-founder Charlotte Porter said.
Once the audience warmed up to the rules of the game they got right behind it.
"When they began to understand how it all works, they really enjoyed it. They love it when people go down and they love it when the jammer gets out in front and races off."
