A man, his dogs and a 100kg cart arrived in Hastings this week spreading the word of animal welfare.

Stephen Brassett, his pug cross Jake and chihuahua cross Piccolo embarked on "The Longest Walk" four months ago, and are visiting animal welfare organisations between Invercargill and Whangarei.

The trio expect to walk about 4500km in a year-long project.

"I was burnt out and decided to create a more proactive role for myself so here I am."

So far the Wellingtonian had been pleasantly surprised by the uptake and support for animals by the public.

"I think generally people are aware of animal welfare as an idea but I want more people to know about all of the little organisations and how they help.

"I think it's important that people make the right choices for their animals and know what they need for a quality life."

The trio spend the night in his self-contained cart, which weighs 100kg but has been designed to only feel about 10-15kg on the shoulders.

The modified bike camper can hold enough food for 10 days, enough dog food for 20 days and 11 litres of water.

"It is a long way to walk with this on your back but the most challenging aspect hasn't been the walking it's actually doing laundry."

The Antarctic blast, which swooped up the country, hasn't helped his cause.

"My clothes don't dry and then because they stay wet for a few days I have to re-wash them again."

Mr Brassett has been stoked with the support and kindness of the different communities with people offering up their lawns and backyards for the trio to camp on.

CHB Vets owner Karen Phillips met Mr Brassett on the road a few days ago and invited him in for a bite to eat.

"He is a really interesting guy and he is good at getting people to think about animal welfare in the community and putting thoughts into action."

Ms Phillips, who does a lot of welfare work, said his trip up the country was all good stuff and felt his presence would increase welfare organisations awareness.

She said he was also working on some projects such as the national cat management strategy.

"He has met with a few people as he looks at how to manage wild and feral cat problems, which occur in most communities."

After arriving in southern Hawke's Bay last week Mr Brassett visited the SPCA in Dannevirke and Waipukurau and is visiting Hastings and Napier SPCAs at the end of the week.

He also hopes to meet with other rescue organisations in the area such as Adoptadog, People For Pets Hastings and Watchdog.

On Saturday the community is invited to meet Mr Brassett and his dogs at the Soundshell on Marine Parade in Napier for a walk along the waterfront.

"Social dogs are invited as well and it is just a chance to catch up and chat about the animal welfare organisations and for people to show their support."

If anyone wants to donate to the cause there is a Give a Little page called The Longest Walk NZ where funds will be split among the different charities.

If people want to help keep Mr Brassett going directly they can donate to him via PayPal using the receiver email: thelongestwalknz@gmail.com.
