TRAMPOLINING

Gisborne Trampoline Club continued its string of strong performances at last weekend’s North Island Tumbling Championships.

The club sent a team of five to Rotorua and came away with four medals, three of them gold.

Hayley Rolls added a third North Island championship to her 2021 accolades, winning the 10-and-under division, having won the trampoline and double mini title the weekend before.

The girl they call “supergirl” dominated the competition with “fantastic” passes, head coach Doug Callahan said.

“She gets better and better every time she hits that tumbling track,” he said.

“Hopefully, she’ll have it all together for nationals.”

Capria Tamatea in the 13-14 age group took the title against a large field.

Callahan said she had been going from strength to strength, and he expected her to win a New Zealand title. However, that would depend on what happened “on the day”.

Sophie Rolls, in her first tumbling floor in a competition, won gold in the eight-and-under division.

She completed her passes exactly how Callahan wanted them but she is too young to compete at nationals.

Bella Campbell-Reidy was competing in her first competition outside Gisborne and was third in the 10-and-under division.

Lily Rolls was the only Gisborne competitor who did not medal. She had already qualified for the national championships.

Callahan said Rolls used the event to try to qualify for the world championships by doing more difficult manoeuvres but was unsuccessful in her attempts.
