Gisborne Athletics Club made the most of its last night at Awapuni Sports Stadium before the summer break.
Jayden Selena — who aspires to make the magical four-metre mark — pipped George Bennett by three centimetres to reach 3.78m in the long jump.
Cameron Alexander set a nice pace in
leading the 1500 metres from start to finish in a time of 5 minutes 45 seconds, and Kim Hedley ran powerfully to win the 300m in 45 seconds.
Three Gisborne athletes — Briana Irving, Jack Sadler and Seven Mapu — are hoping to make this weekend a big one at the 48th New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Athletics Association Track, Field and 45th Road Race Championships.
All three are competing in the demanding 100m/200m double at the Tauranga Domain and that means potentially heart-bursting heats, semifinals and finals in each event.
