NETBALL

HIGH School Old Girls and Whangara Old Girls will be keen to continue their winning ways when premier grade netball hits the Victoria Domain courts again tomorrow.

The three top-seeded teams came through with wins on the opening day of the season last Saturday.

“The defending champions HSOG played some good netball last week, and showed good understanding between players,” netball commentator Sherrill Beale said.

“Horouta Gold were competitive with YMP last week until halftime, but were then pressured into making errors, and YMP pulled away.

“Horouta will need a team effort for the full game if they want to stop HSOG tomorrow.”

At 11am, Whangara Old Girls meet Claydens Waikohu.

“Whangara were made to work against Ritana Senior A last week, but looked more settled in the second half when their connections worked more accurately,” Beale said.

“I am expecting them to start strongly tomorrow.”

Beale said Waikohu let last week’s game slip away in the second half.

“They will need to maintain consistency for the full game if they want to take this win.”

The match of the day looms large at 12 midday when Ritana Senior A play Gisborne Girls’ High School Senior A.

“Both teams had a loss last week against our two top seeds,” Beale said.

“Both teams have retained a good number of last year’s players and, at times, last week displayed some good connections through the court.”

Beale said Ritana pushed Whangara all the way.

“The students were even leading at halftime, and in their end lost by five goals.

“On the other hand, Girls’ High made a nervous start last week, but once they had calmed their nerves they let the ball flow.

“I am expecting this to be a close contest.

All senior teams will also be on the courts from 9am through to 12.50pm.

Beale said there were some close games last week, so she expected more of the same.
