A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

Simon Jeune tempted fate by lifting the Enterprise Motor Group open foursomes trophy before he and partner Glenn Morley teed off on Saturday afternoon.

The trophy for the gross winners was sitting in pride of place on a table next to the first tee, and the golfing gods could have construed Jeune’s actions as laughter in their faces.

They didn’t although cursed rather than prophetic was appearing to be a more relevant word early in their round.

Morley and Jeune ended up clinching Tairāwhiti golf’s largest piece of silverware after shooting 1-over 73.

Their second shot of the day — struck by Jeune — on the par-5 first hole looked headed towards the centre of the green only for the ball to catch the large pine tree that guards the left-hand side of the hole.

It was the last they saw of it.

The pair managed to up and down with their second ball for bogey-6 but followed it up with bogeys on the second and fourth hole to be 3-over.

From there, though, they had five birdies in 12 holes, including a Morley chip-in on the ninth hole.

Bogeys on the 17th and 18th cost them red figures but 73 was enough to win the trophy — in which over 100 golf balls can fit — by one stroke.

Brent Colbert and Collin Jeffrey were second on 74. Starting on the 10th, they went out in 2-over 34 but were unable to continue the momentum. Their 39 points, however, won them the stableford prize.

Wairoa duo Aaron Whatuira and Matiu Manuel were third on 75, followed by William Brown and Pete Kerekere (77).

Steve Shields represented the major sponsor with pride.

The new vehicle sales manager combined with Electrinet Park’s Peter Stewart and they romped to victory in the net, courtesy of a stunning

82-19-63.

Stewart, a week after helping Park to victory in the Oligoi Jug men’s interclub pennants final, said Shields’ putter was on fire.

They were six shots clear of the field.

Patutahi combo Rios Moleta and Dean Pohatu also had a good day, their 80-11-69 placing them second in the net.

The tournament, traditionally a men’s open, was postponed to

May 28 and it was decided to open it up to women’s and mixed pairs.

Park members Maria Sheridan and Carney Pipi took up that opportunity and posted 92-19-73, for 37 points, for second in the stableford.

The club was rapt with the response and support.

Historically it has been a 36-hole competition but was reduced to 18 in a sign of the times.

■ The Kahlenberg Cup women’s pairs title chase is down to two.

Jan Utting and Marg Lane will play Rosie Spence and Di Sherratt in the handicap matchplay final on June 8.

Both pairs had to work hard to navigate their way through their semifinals yesterday.

Utting and Lane beat top qualifiers Kirsty Shaw and Fay Pell on the 17th while Spence and Sherratt pipped Maxine Francois and Pen Wanklyn on the 18th.

Leigh Fletcher and Jenny Williams face Lynne Holmberg and Odette Thompson in the consolation final.

Chris Fox and Matt Downie only got into golf in October of last year.

Seven months later they will be teeing it up in their first experience of matchplay as the 2022 Te Kanawa Cup top qualifiers.

Fox, known more in the past for his BMX exploits, and Downie compiled 45 best-ball stableford points on Sunday to grab the No.1 spot.

With 31 pairs having entered, it also earned them a bye straight to the round of 16. The rest face round of 32 elimination matches.

Fox said they took up golf as a bit of fun but as summer progressed decided to take it more seriously.

Fox has got his WHS handicap index down to 21.1 while Downie is on 33.4.

Ian Loffler and Steve Webb qualified second, Dan Collier and Ray Walford third, Wayne Carpendale and Phil Nepia fourth and Shannon Toa and son Beau fourth.

Another new player, Phil Te Hau, whose WHS handicap index is pending, was also in the points — 45, which was only good enough for second.

Te Puia Hot Springs’ long trip from the Coast to Waikohu came to triumphant fruition in round 5 of the Poverty Bay women’s interclub pennants on Saturday.

The round was held in conjunction with the Waikohu women’s open.

Unfortunately both city clubs — Poverty Bay and Electrinet Park — were unable to field sides and with Waikohu not entering the pennants this year, only four clubs were represented.

The Springs, with a little local help, won the aggregate stableford format.

Hiria McClutchie, Georgina Brown, Iritana Ngarimu and Waikohu ring-in Audrey Tamanui-Nunn totalled 112 points.

They were well ahead of Wairoa on 95, with Mahia and Patutahi on 93 apiece.

Mahia are the overall leaders on 25, followed by Wairoa 23, Te Puia 19, Patutahi 18, Poverty Bay 11 and Park 9.

Round 6 of the seven-round series is at Te Puia on June 18.
