Eleven-year-old opener Kelan Bryant, Year 7, hit eight fours and a six for 50 runs off 45 balls. He was superb in his 56 minutes at the crease.
Noah Torrance-Cribb, batting at No.7, was the last man to fall — run out — having made 24 from 14 balls. He struck five fours in 20 minutes.
Left-armer Ryan Harvey (3-13 off four overs) swung the new ball and first change Bell (3-17 off three) produced the best spell of the game. He took three prize scalps — Gisborne Intermediate captain Sebastian Wilson (No.3), vice-captain and second drop Dylan Foster and leftie Campbell Steele.
Wilson said: “Our bowlers were the equal of theirs and we held all our catches but tomorrow we want to be consistently alert — watch the game harder, be sharper and develop game-sense.”
Wilson took 3-15 off four overs, joint vice-captain Peter Reynolds took 2-17 off four, and Torrance-Cribb took 2-18 off two.
St Peter’s coach Andrew Bell said it was a great game that could have gone either way.
He noted that only two players from each team made double figures (for St Peter’s, classy No.3 Nathan Murray scored 29 off 33 balls, and Ryan Harvey scored 34 off 26 at No.6).
“We were 20-4 off 3.4 overs when Nathan and Ryan came together. They added 56 runs for the fifth wicket and Nathan brought us home under pressure.”
No.8 Murdoch Dawe, who had done well to keep leg-spinner Dylan Foster at bay, got the winning run — a single from the fourth ball of the 16th over, bowled by Gareth Langford.
Gisborne Intermediate were to play Kamo this morning and Tauranga Intermediate this afternoon.
