TE Puia Springs member Doreen Goldsmith was the star of the Property Brokers women’s Christmas tournament yesterday.

Goldsmith was a runaway winner of the 18-hole stableford after racking up 48 points in her round of 110-48-62 — the best score at the Bay since the new World Handicap System came into force in March.

On a day of excellent scoring, Goldsmith was seven shots clear of a quartet of players — Sue Kemp, Vicki Fraser, Faye Allen and Morag Shanks — with another three players on 40.

A 20-shot swing within two days by Gray Clapham summed up the Beauty and the Beast that is the sport of golf.

Clapham shot 75-13-62, for 46 points, off the championship tees last Thursday — the best round of his 20-plus-years hitting the dimpled ball.

“Gray-zy” had three birdies in his round and nines of 39, 36 and finished eight points ahead of the field.

Three days later the bubble burst with 94 off his new WHS index of 10.4, which had dropped 2.3 from his Thursday round.

Clapham was one of several 40-plussers last Thursday.

Marty Reynolds broke 100 for the first time this year in winning the division 2 stableford with 95-31-64, for 44 points, heading off Reid Fletcher’s 42 and John Aitchison’s 40.

A chunk off next year’s sub is up for grabs at the final of the Primo Cup on Saturday.

Forty golfers — 27 men and13 women — have qualified for the 18-hole final.

The men will be battling for the first prize of $600 for first, $300 for second and $100 for third.

The women are vying for $300, $150 and $50.

The money will be deducted from their 2021 subs.

The club’s AGM is on Monday, November 16 from 5.30pm.
