THE premier silverware went the way of Electrinet Park but locals ruled in every other division at another successful edition of the King of the Coast over the weekend.

Park supremo Anaru Reedy proved too good for 2020 KotC champion William Brown in the championship 16.

The hosts, however, were to the fore in the second to fourth 16s.

Club captain Taine Lincoln beat Kawerau’s Tuakana August 4 and 3 in the Cook Handicap second 16 final.

Mark Watts had a tight battle with Waikohu’s Percy Milner on his way to winning the Uawa Handicap third 16 1-up.

And Joe Sheridan won the Hauiti Handicap fourth 16, beating Poverty Bay’s Rob Fergus 4 and 3 in the final.

ANTHONY Pahina won’t be retaining the intermediate men’s club championship.

That’s because he’s vying for the senior honours in 2020 and will do it as No.3 seed.

Pahina shot 78 in his qualifying round, a score only bettered by the two favourites — defending champion Anaru Reedy and Sel Peneha.

They had matching 74s but Peneha got the No.1 seeding on countback.

Reedy remains a warm favourite but is wary of Peneha and rates Pahina. “Don’t let his sleepy demeanour fool you. He’s got game.”

What is certain to be a hotly-contested intermediate division is headed by Danny Boyle, whose 79 would have been good enough for the fourth qualifying spot in the seniors.

Tom Reynolds (85) was second and Wayne Carpendale (87) third.

Recently-crowned Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs champions Craig Christophers and Matt Henwood are on a collision course for the final in the junior division.

Christophers topped the division with 84 while Henwood was second with 88.

The club was delighted to see several players enter the endeavour section. Jordon Coppon was top qualifier with 104 and advanced straight to the semifinals in the seven-man field.

Qualifying was held over several weeks, with players having to designate their round before they played it.

Maria Sheridan put her name on two trophies in the space of four days.

Sheridan last week won the Peter Hatwell Cup with a best-two-out-of-three-nets total of 148.

She also combined with Jacque Akuhata-Nickerson over consecutive Saturdays to win the Foster Cup 36-hole women’s pairs stableford on countback from defending champion Tracey Ford and Mihi Marino.

Both pairs finished with 84 points.

Three women’s trophies with plenty of history were decided over the past week.

Rochelle Taewa and Sally Spence collected the silverware at the silver and bronze 27-hole tournament yesterday.

Taewa’s 131 (84, 47) won the overall gross in the silver division and with it the AB&J Trophy.

Spence won the bronze division gross with a 142 (93, 49) total and was presented the Meg Harper Salver.

Jan Utting won the silver net and Gay Young the stableford.

Pen Wanklyn won the bronze net and Marg Lane the stableford.

Judy Ngarimu (gross), Sue Ellwood (net) and Rob Dymock (stableford) were the 9-hole division winners.

The Duncombe Salver 36-hole best net eclectic was held over the weekend, with Odette Thompson and Kirsty Shaw emerging the champions.

The pair posted 64 then 60 to win by three shots from Jan Utting and Vonnie Fletcher.

Peter Hakiwai led a 40-point-and-over charge in the men’s stableford on Saturday.

The former Poverty Bay-East Coast representative carded his best round in over a year — 75-9-66 for 42 points — while Tene Goldsmith had five birdies in his 74-7-67, for 41, and Andy Hayward was third with 77-9-68, for 40.

Qualifying for the men’s club championships is on Saturday, August 14, which is also round 3 of the Dodgshun Cup.

Seniors will qualify over 36 holes and the other divisions will qualify over 18 holes.

SPUD Te Rito and Aaron Coker proved a mountain too high for lone wolf Tipi Ruru in the men’s pairs championship final.

Ruru was without partner Ike Ruru for the handicap matchplay decider.

He heads into this weekend on 18.4 after galloping to victory in the Aces men’s net on Sunday.

The former Poverty Bay greenkeeper started playing regularly last month for the first time in over seven years.

His 72-3-69, for 37 points, won on Saturday on countback from Hukanui Brown’s six-birdie 67-+2-69.
