THE hangover from the implementation of the World Handicap appears to be over.
When the WHS started operating, many club players found their handicaps had dropped — some by several shots.
Winning stableford scores went from the 40s to the mid-30s as members adjusted to a system where playing to handicap means you have to play well.
There was also the factor that the eight, rather than 10, best cards of your past 20 rounds counted towards your handicap.
Time and the advent of summer has seen a gradual improvement in scoring and last week reflected that at the Bay.
Mark Karalus led the way with a 43-point haul to win the division 2 men’s stableford on Sunday.
Mike Dodgshun won the division 2 stableford last Thursday with 42 points, one ahead of Cliff Poole.
Tuki Sweeney won the division 1 stableford on Sunday with 40 points, heading off Simon Jeune’s 72 off the stick for 39.
The quality of the Awapuni Links course could also be a reason.
Players have been enjoying superb greens although straying from the fairway as the course is prepared for the New Zealand amateur in two weeks can be punishing.
Meanwhile, the call has gone out for billets for the amateur from October 21 to 25.
Those who can assist are asked to contact Dave Keown (021724653).
