GISBORNE Girls’ High School took their chance to move into second place in the women’s football league on Sunday.

With Marist having the bye, Girls’ High beat Campion 11-0 to go level on points (15) with Marist, but ahead on goal difference.

Gisborne Laundry Services Thistle are six points clear at the top of the table. They beat Bohemians 8-0 on Sunday.

United, in their first home game of the season, beat Lytton High School 3-0 to consolidate their hold on fourth spot, two points behind Girls’ High and Marist.

Lytton are fifth, four points behind United.

Girls’ High coach Matt Pierard said his team played well, particularly Paula Jeune and Tia Kahaki in midfield.

“They fed the ball really well and our defence was sound,” he said.

“It gave our forwards and wide players lots of ball to create chances.”

Campion College were without one of their key players, goalie Brooke Bennett.

“Their stand-in goalie did really well,” Pierard said.

“She had lots of shots coming at her and she saved lots. We just had all the possession and we created lots of chances for our strikers.”

At Anzac Park, United’s Lucy Blair scored twice. One of those goals came after a corner by Sarah Graham, who scored the team’s other goal, a breakaway effort when she latched on to a pass from midfield.

United coach Molly Adams said the team “just clicked”.

“Everyone had a really good game. Lucy scored two beautiful goals and Sarah got a beauty too.”

Becca Peach had a great game as sweeper, keeping the back line tight, Adams said.

Bohemians had a tough task, up against top-of-the-table Thistle, but Thistle coach Blake Mulrooney echoed many in the league with his praise for Bohemians.

“They have hugely improved,” he said.

“They had lots of energy and were enthusiastic. They just got stuck in and it was good to see.”

Mulrooney said his side played well too, Lizzie Hall as usual having a great game and keeper Erin Sycamore venturing beyond the penalty area in the second half to score a goal.

The draw for Sunday10.30am: Anzac Park, United v Gisborne Girls’ High School; Campion, Campion College v Gisborne Laundry Services Thistle; Nelson Park No.1, Bohemians v Marist. Bye: Lytton.
