The McKenzie Mixed Graded Triples tournament was held on Wednesday, September 28, at Poverty Bay Bowling Club.

Forty players contested the Village Meats-sponsored tournament.

Teams played three games of 10 ends or 90 minutes, and produced some great bowls that will have set them up for the busy season ahead.

The tournament was also supported by players from Gisborne, Kahutia and Tolaga Bay bowling clubs.

The winners were Boon McIlroy (skip), Ben Elkington and Holli Elkington, with three wins and 21 ends.

Runners-up, with three wins and 16 ends, were Andrew Ball (s), Kym Brown and Otto Louw.

Third place, with two wins and 17 ends, went to Jan Powell (s), Tony Dobson and Win Baker.

Many thanks to the players, helpers and sponsor.

SOME big fightbacks featured in Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s junior pairs championships last Sunday.

Win Baker (skip) and Anna Colvin won the junior women’s pairs. They beat Norma Miller (s) and Joan Gledhill 11-6 in the final.

Miller and Gledhill had done well to get to the final. They’d fallen far behind Krystal Williams (s) and Olivia Scott, who’d played very well to build a 9-0 lead.

But Miller and Gledhill fought back and eventually won the match 15-10.

Baker and Colvin were undefeated in their three games but Jean Patterson (s) and Jenny Amor gave them a close game before losing 11-7.

Dawson Owen (s) and Jack Clark won the junior men’s pairs. They beat Les Whittington (s) and John Andrews in a close final.

Whittington and Andrews led 9-1 but Owen and Clark fought back to win 12-10.

In the fourth-round provisional final Whittington and Andrews had defeated Owen and Clark 12-5.

New club members BJ Seymour (s) and Scott Amor played well in the first round to defeat Whittington and Andrews 12-11.

The weather was a challenge for the championship controllers, who cancelled play for the Saturday.

On the Sunday, a longer lunch break was held to allow surface water to drain away from the greens. Five rounds were played and the championship was completed using a two-life format with games of 90 minutes or 12 ends.
