Jillian McGarva And Oliver Fata

Jillian McGarva And Oliver Fata

Jillian McGarva can take up to two hours some mornings to do her hair.

The Gisborne early childhood relief teacher creates wacky hairstyles every day to bring smiles to the faces of children.

Jillian, 45, says some people stop her on the street, or in the supermarket, and say “I love your hat”.

“It's my hair,” she tells them.

Jillian has been doing it for about four years and says it is a great way to express her creativity.

“I get great responses from the public when walking down the street. The smiles on their faces says it all.”

Her hairstyles can take anything from 15 minutes to two hours, depending on whether it is a “double bouquet”, or “just a simple spider or octopus”.

Jillian enjoys the challenge.

She does all styles herself, using two mirrors, hair gel and sometimes hairspray.

A bottle is hidden inside her hair, as hair is brushed up over it to gives her style the height.

The bottle, however, had to be shortened so she could get in and out of her car easier.

It is all worth it to see the smiles on the children's faces, she says.

■ Jillian's Wednesday hairdo is admired by Oliver Fata at Victoria Childcare and Education Centre. The do features tools and nails Jillian hand-knitted herself, then clipped on to her hair which has been brushed over a bottle and kept in place with hair gel.
