DESIGNER Katy Wallace is sharing her talents with Gisborne’s youngest generation.

Ms Wallace has made her mark on the New Zealand art scene with her curious and eclectic furniture creations, and now she is making her mark on the Gisborne art scene through a holiday programme for primary school students. Groups are taking part in a different activity each day at Ms Wallace’s home-based art studio. Yesterday featured screen printing their own bird-themed T-shirts.

“We just had this art studio sitting here, so we thought why not?,” said Katy. “I think it is really cool for them to have something they designed and worked on to take home.”

Screen printing involves cutting out individual aspects of the design and printing each colour layer individually.

“I have lots of different techniques and things to share,” said Katy. “I love it, it is pretty exciting.”

Bella Schmelz, 8, took part in the screen printing workshop.

“I like designing my own T-shirt. It is cool to be able to take it home.”

Bella was in her element drawing and cutting out her bird design although she was not sure what kind of bird it was.

“I usually draw lots of animals at home but I do not know what kind of bird this is,” she said.

Today a new group are making native bird feeders from scratch.
