GISBORNE’s surf lifesaving Nippers will gather at Wainui Beach tomorrow morning, with both Waikanae and Midway clubs taking their youngsters out to enjoy some clean water and safe swimming conditions.

The city beaches remain closed due to the water-borne bacteria, and woody debris.

Midway and Waikanae will join Wainui SLSC for Nippers sessions at 10am at Wainui tomorrow.

“This is an absolutely fantastic initiative by the chair of the Tairāwhiti Junior Surf Committee, Sam Gavin, who recognises the need to continue the important development of skills and the connection of community that Nippers creates from an early age,” said SLSNZ eastern region sport manager Sonia Keepa.

“With the disruptive season we have had over summer, it is so important that we continue this important skill development and sense of community with our Nipper age groups as they are the foundation generation of our surf lifeguards to come.

“We recognise that this may be a difficult time for some to come together, even for a short period of time, therefore it is so important for the wellbeing and sense of normality.”
